‘Perhaps they don’t want to be rid of it?’ suggested Nyssa.

‘That’s silly, Nyssa,’ said Adric calmly. ‘How could anyone want to live with all those troubles?’ Nyssa stared wonderingly at him.

‘The boy is right!’ said Monarch triumphantly. ‘Think, girl,’ urged Enlightenment. ‘Think!’

Nyssa looked hard at her. ‘Believe me, I am thinking.’

In the Doctor’s quarters, Bigon was still doing his best to convince Tegan. ‘What I say is true. We have been made immortal.’

‘So it would seem,’ agreed the Doctor. ‘As long as you’ve got spare parts you can go on forever. All you really need is the raw materials.’

‘That is the reason for Monarch’s invasion of Earth. The previous visits established its suitability.’

‘By George, that’s it! Of course, that’s it! He’s after the silicon. Don’t you see, Tegan? Silicon is one of the largest components of the Earth’s crust. If he conquers Earth, he’ll have all the silicon he wants, and the carbon too!’

Bigon went on with his appalling story, still in the same placid voice. ‘He will begin by replacing the population of Earth with his own people.’

‘How?’ asked Tegan.

‘Everything is planned. The landing will be peaceful.

He has prepared a message of peace, offering the people of Earth the help of his superior alien intelligence. That is why he wants your help, to convince the people of Earth that he means them no harm.’

‘But how is he going to dispose of three billion Earth people?’

‘In the Mobilliary there is a poison. The Urbankans of the Flesh Time secreted it in a gland. It is the deadliest poison in the universe. It causes organic matter to collapse in upon itself’

‘What does that mean?’
